We have been parked up at the Coolgardie Oval with about 80 other motorhomes. This morning some of the solos left as they are being taken in a day early to the Rally. Its about 45kms from here. There are about 40 of us left, big happy hour tonight. We were last here in 1970. Interesting to say, it is prob. deader now than then. Big wide main street, flanked with very old buildings. Two servos, one small IGA, 1 pub, 3 museums. The IGA closes at lunchtime Sat. Reopens Mon morning.
The museums are all excellent. We have been here 4 days in this "dead" town but havent run out of things to see. The highlight is the "Tin Sign Shed". Owned by a chap called Maurice who has been collecting signs, petrol bowsers and anything old for 11 years. His collection of signs is gobsmacking. Display cases hold FULL packets of cigarettes, tobacco, cornflakes, wash powder etc. All from the early 1900s onwards. Lots of memories for us here. Such a lovely man, he and Rick hit it off and he took Rick out to his "farm" where he has so much more stored in his house and outbuildings. His collection is valued at around $400,000. Took so many photos of the signs, some so politically incorrect nowadays. Lots referring to smoking helping to soothe a sore throat etc.
