The roads in Qld. are shocking. So rough, that we have been literally bounced out of our seats more times than I can remember. There was a lot of water lying on the sides of the road and in the gullies when we came into Qld. and because they have had severe flooding, many of the roads are damaged. Roadwork going on everywhere, before the next big wet comes around Oct. onwards. Illuminated signs on most of the major roads, advising whether roads further afield are open or closed. That did make the roadside vegetation lush and green though. It did make a very pretty picture as you travelled thru. Its hard to imagine, when you drive thru the Outback, that many of these places in the early part of the year were/are under water. Lots of dead kangaroos, hawks etc. on the roads and hundreds of crows and hawks feasting on the roadkill. Still seeing emus on the roadsides. In one stretch of around 100kms. we would have seen more than 100 dead roos. It made you quite sad to see. Our next stop was a small town called Mitchell. Camped on the banks of a beautiful weir with quite a few other travellers. We ran the gennie, got out the new battery charger, charged the battery and hoped to hell it worked. It didnt. Gave up, drove the bus into town, parked up and visited the Artesian Pools here in town. What a wonderful morning we had. One pool is 38oC and the other 22oC. The idea of course, soak in the hot for 15 mins., jump in the cold and then repeat, repeat, repeat. It was glorious. Could have stayed all day and become very wrinkly in the process. The Artesian Basin where this water comes from is 3km. under the surface and extends under the arid parts of Qld. NSW NT SA and WA. Vitally important for outback towns and properties.

Our lovely camp spot at Mitchell |

Aussie battlers home. Made entirely of kerosene tins. Original as the day it was built. |
Next stop is a cattle station at Charleville. We will be on power and will once again try to get the car charged up. Failing that it will be a mechanics for us and more $$$$$$$.
